We’re delighted to be returning on the 1st December for part three of the Professional Pensions Deskflix series in partnership with Mercer; Governance - creating resilience.
This one day virtual event will provide you with a holistic look at governance, as the recent crisis has shown, a strong governance framework is paramount for success during volatility. In the morning we will be considering the different investment governance approaches for DB schemes from investment subcommittees, independent and sole trustees as well as fiduciary management and master trusts. We’ll also be looking at risk management providing you with the opportunity to assess your own scheme governance, where you are now and more importantly where you like would to be and how to set those targets.
In the afternoon we’ll be turning our focus to DC schemes asking the fundamental question; what are the essential components you need in your governance framework to have retirement ready members?

Head of Digital Communications, UK & EMEA, MercerView Bio
James is a Principal within the Communication business in the UK. He advises and consults with clients across a broad range of communication issues and topics, with particular focus on digital communication whereby employee data and technology is used to enhance the relevance and impact of the deliverable. Examples of recent projects include:
• Developing a new online experience to improve the way in which employees deliver communication solutions that are more templated in nature, helping to improve business efficiency, increase capacity and improve profitability of the projects being delivered.
• Partnering with a Saudi based investment company that required support to develop an effective communication strategy for the employees of its clients, targeting active members and non-members to ensure the right messages, information and tools are provided to the right audience.
• Implementation of a digital portal to raise awareness on pension options at retirement, ensuring members make timely decision to support future retirement income needs.
James holds a BA Hons in Business Studies and has an Advanced Certificate in Marketing from the CIM.
Partner, MercerView Bio
Jenny was Chief Actuarial Officer of Mercer from 2017 to 2020 and became the first female Chair of the Association of Consulting Actuaries in June 2018, serving until May 2020. She is also a member of the Cost Transparency Initiative Board. She is a Scheme Actuary, supporting her clients which range in size from £150m to £30bn, in all areas of funding and risk management.
Jenny graduated from Oxford University in 1991 with an MA in Mathematics. She qualified as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) in 1994.
Marion de Voy
UK DB Governance Leader, MercerView Bio
In her role as UK DB Governance Leader, Marion is responsible for ensuring that schemes are managed effectively and efficiently to the highest standards of scheme governance. The COVID-19 pandemic has tested the resilience of pension scheme governance, sometimes in unexpected ways, and she has worked with other senior team members to help shape Mercer’s support for its clients throughout the pandemic. The lessons learned over this time have helped inform today’s presentation.
UK Governance Leader, MercerView Bio
Jim is the UK Governance Leader for Mercer's Defined Contribution and Financial Wellness business in the UK.
In that role, Jim also has responsibility for developing Mercer’s ideas and consulting resources on DC governance, including board effectiveness, value for member’s assessments and legislation briefings.
He sits on the Policy Board for Mercer’s Wealth Business.
Jim is also a senior consultant to several medium and large defined contribution arrangements, both trust and contract-based, as well as three hybrid DB/DC arrangements.
He joined Mercer in 1990, having worked for Noble Lowndes & Partners Ltd in Dublin. He is based in our Glasgow and Edinburgh offices.
Principal, Head of Wealth Communications, MercerView Bio
Sarah is a Principal within the Communication business in the UK. Sarah works with both corporate clients and trustee groups and is passionate about putting the member experience at the heart of pensions strategy projects, particularly where the client is making a complex change to benefits. Examples of recent projects include:
• Leading advice to a corporate on the overall communication strategy for a challenging pension change project with heavy Union involvement, which included drafting, designing and delivering a range of communication materials to consult with members around the closure of two DB schemes and one DC scheme.
• Working with a trustee board to help them determine their overall objectives for the DC scheme, mapping out how they can be achieved through carrying out different communication campaigns and encouraging members to use the online portal.
• Communicating investment changes to members of a DC scheme, with complex segmentation required to ensure they received the correct messaging with a clear call to action.
Sarah holds an MA Hons in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Oxford and is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
Principal Consultant, MercerView Bio
Mick is a Principal Consultant in Mercer’s Defined Contribution team. He advises a portfolio of clients on their Defined Contribution arrangements, supporting them on all aspects including the implementation and design, auto-enrolment, governance, investment and communications.
Mick has extensive experience in M&A projects, including DC plan set-up, consolidation, and wind-up. He is the Unit Head for Mercer’s DC business in the North of England.
Mick is also a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, spending part of his time advising trustees and companies on their DB schemes. He provides pro bono services to a well-known charity, sitting on their Pensions Steering Committee and their Remuneration Committee. Mick has an honours degree in Mathematics from the University of Oxford.
Mick lives in Warwickshire with his wife Caroline (an economics professor) and they have two children, Isobel and Jacob. Hobbies include tennis, running and music.
Investment strategist, Mercer Workplace Savings, MercerView Bio
James is an investment specialist within the Mercer Workplace Savings team, Mercer’s UK DC delegated solutions business. James’ focus is on the design and operation of the investment strategy for Mercer’s delegated DC solution, including the Mercer Master Trust where he is the lead investment strategist. Prior to joining the Workplace Savings team James worked within Mercer’s DC investment consulting business. James is a CFA Charterholder.
UK Commercial Leader of Investment Solutions, MercerView Bio
Dan is a Partner and UK Head of Fiduciary Management for Mercer. He is responsible for bespoke investment solutions for clients, developing commercial relationships and overseeing the execution of Mercer’s investment solutions, distribution and growth strategy. Dan sits on Mercer’s UK Growth Leadership Committee, Wealth Leadership Team and the Investment Solutions European Leadership Committee. Dan has 25 years’ experience in investment consulting, institutional asset management and business development, including 17 years at Mercer. He started his career with Mercer in New York in 1997 before transferring to London in 2000. During this time, he led the launch and development of Mercer’s UK Delegated Solutions business from inception in 2006 through 2014. For the last 3 years, Dan was Head of Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Putnam Investments leading its institutional client development. Prior to this, he was Global Head of Consultant Relations at Winton Capital Management. Dan is a Director of AIMSE Europe.
Dan graduated with honours from the University of Notre Dame, IN, USA and is a CFA charterholder.
Partner, UK Wealth People Leader, MercerView Bio
Tess is a Partner at Mercer and advises both DB and DC pension scheme clients. She sits on Mercer’s UK Wealth Leadership Team as People Leader. Tess is Chair of the Association of Consulting Actuaries (ACA) DC Committee and has held a number of roles on cross-industry groups. For example, she chaired the Institute of Actuaries’ working party on retirement savings products and currently sits on the ACA’s Climate Risk Group. Tess is assistant examiner on the Actuarial Risk exam and is a mentor for the Cherie Blair Foundation.
She joined Mercer in 2011, having previously worked as an Investment Consultant at JLT (formerly HSBC Actuaries and Consultants). Prior to this, she worked for Watson Wyatt in their pensions practice.
During lockdown, she ran the World Cup of Chocolate Bars on Twitter, and has purchased a series of complicated jigsaws and painting kits, all of which remain untouched.
UK DC Leader, MercerView Bio
Phil is DC Leader for Mercer’s UK business. He is responsible for the delivery of Mercer's market leading DC consulting and product solutions, including Mercer Workplace Savings™, the Mercer Master Trust and Mercer Money.
He joined Mercer's UK DC team in June 2014, having previously worked in Mercer’s Investment business. This included 3 years in Mercer's specialist defined contribution and post-retirement unit in Sydney, Australia.
He graduated from the University of Warwick with a BSc in Industrial Economics in 2007, is a CFA charterholder and has passed the UK Investment Management Certificate.

Gail runs the Mercer UK DC Consulting team which comprises over 70 DC specialists based around the UK. She has worked in pensions for over 30 years and works with a variety of trustee and corporate clients helping them ensure their pension arrangements deliver the best outcomes for members.

Jonathan is editor of Professional Pensions and has been reporting on UK occupational pensions since 2001. He has won a number of awards during his career, most recently the SPP Trade Journalist of the Year Award in 2019. He is also holder of the PMI's Retirement Provision Certificate.

Lucy Tusa CFA joined Mercer in April 2007 and is a Partner in the Investment Consulting department. She was awarded the CFA charter in 2006 and has been an Associate of the UK Society of Investment Professionals (ASIP) since 1986.
At Mercer, Lucy provides investment consultancy services to a range of pension fund, foundation and endowment clients. She advises clients on strategy setting, asset allocation, liability- management and manager selection. She is a member of Mercer’s Global Dynamic Asset Allocation (DAA) Committee. Lucy is a contributor to the firm’s intellectual capital, particularly in relation to equity markets and responsible investment. Lucy manages Mercer’s responsible investment team in Europe. She speaks regularly at industry events.
Lucy has an MA (Hons) in History from Trinity College, Cambridge.
Head of Risk Transfer and DB Journey Planning, MercerView Bio
For the last 20 plus years, Andrew has advised pension schemes and corporate sponsors how to improve outcomes for members and other stakeholders.
Andrew currently leads Mercer's UK Risk Transfer Group, covering bulk annuities, longevity swaps, longevity analytics and member options. In this role, he has been involved in a number of ground-breaking risk transfer transactions including projects relating to the AIB, Heathrow, Pirelli, MMC, Serco, ScottishPower, Manweb, EMI, ITV and CDC pension liabilities. He is well-known in the UK Pensions industry as a leading risk transfer specialist, speaking at industry seminars and contributing to press articles.
Andrew also leads on DB Journey Planning and Consolidation for Mercer and believes that we have a crucial role in helping our clients to understand the full range of options and finding the right strategy to meet their individual needs.
He particularly enjoys developing new solutions to help clients such as Mercer DB Master Trust, Mercer SmartDB Streamlined Longevity solution, the Mercer Marsh Longevity Captive solution and Mercer Pension Risk Exchange.
He is passionate about diversity and mentoring and aim to have a positive impact on the industry that I enjoy working in.
